It is considered as the first human medicinal product to have been entirely designed by artificial intelligence (AI). A vaccine against seasonal influenza was developed by researchers at the University Flinders, in Australia, thanks to Sam. SAM is not a person but a program of artificial intelligence. It is an acronym for ” search algorithm for ligands”, in French” algorithm for research for drugs”. As its name indicates, SAM is intended to search for all compounds imaginable to develop a human medicinal product effectively.
“We had to teach the program of IA a set of compounds known to activate the human immune system as well as a set of Ineffective compounds, explained to Business Insider Australia Professor Nikolai Petrovsky, Director of Research. The work of the Artificial Intelligence was then to determine for itself what distinguishes a drug that works of a drug that does not work. “
Thanks to a second algorithm, Researchers then created billions of imaginary compounds that they have presented to SAM. The IA was then screened to retain a dozen candidates potentially effective as adjuvants (drug added to another to strengthen its action). The selected compounds were synthesized and then tested on human cells. One of them has been retained and is shown to be effective in animals. As a result of this first test encouraging, the new vaccine will enter into a phase of human clinical trials for 12 months in the United States. The researchers hope that the vaccine will be more effective on the man that the seasonal influenza vaccines already exist and that it will complement or replace.
