The auto industry is changing very quickly in Europe, in the name of the environment (electric cars). More and more governments, including the central one of the European Union, are launching stringent laws regarding emissions of CO2, many of which are prepared to start already in 2020.
From next year the various brands are likely for example sanctions millions in the case in which the average emissions of a whole range exceeds a certain threshold, the reason that pushed a group such as FCA to buy quotas Tesla to zero emissions, so as to lower the overall values.
To companies that are lagging behind on the front “green” if they oppose other that instead, they do not see the time to capitalize on its competitive advantage, as Volkswagen for example, that already rubbing their hands for the launch of the new Volkswagen ID.3 100% electric and other vehicles of the family ID.
Of course the German mark is not the only one to have electric cars in “cane” already in 2019, Renault has the new ZOE for example, Peugeot has launched its and-208, Nissan its iconic Leaf totally renewed – model on the market from already 10 years – while Opel sees no time to show its new electrical Travel.
The list could continue yet, we have mentioned only the latest vehicles, omitting also Tesla that with its model 3 is breaking record sales throughout the old continent (and not only). However, BMW has raised a debate, to put it mildly, explosive: the car EV is coming on the market because they are required in a loud voice from the public or for sterile “whims” of the various governments who have decided to kill a fuel such as diesel fuel to promote a switch ground wiring?
Certainly, the deal is remarkable, its mass involves millions and millions of euro investment, both public and private. On the table there are facilities reconverted or built from scratch for the assembling of the new cars and their batteries, the construction of thousands of new charging stations throughout the European territory, the sale of as many wall box for recharging housewife, not to speak of the photovoltaic installations individuals who could nourish the new electric cars “at no cost”.
The sea in which fish is therefore destroyed and crammed full of fish castellans, ready to be inserted in the network in autonomy, but we really need all this in the shortest possible time?
The European drivers do not see the time to convert to the electrical?
According to Klaus Froehlich, development manager at home BMW, we are only taking a gust of sand in the eyes. The manager has stated in the last few hours that the “European users do not want to purchase electric cars, are the governments want”, therefore it would be forcing the market toward a direction not indispensable.
Warning totally contrary to the Transport and Environment (T&E) Union, according to which “producers are apparently maximizing profits of their muscular SUV, in part responsible for the increase in emissions communities of 1,6 % in 2018, to the detriment of the environment, moving toward the electric-only because forced by the laws in force from 2020 onwards”.
A fight no holds barred, therefore, but where is the truth? Difficult to say, we can only cling to the few official data in our possession. In the month of May 2019 in the old continent sales of the electrified cars (100% electric and hybrid plug-in) grew by 28% compared to the same month of the previous year, also thanks to the incentives activated in different countries, including Italy.
63% of these are BEV, supplied only to electrical current, therefore it is not strictly true that users do not want to the harness. According to Klaus Froehlich, motorists would be pushed only by the laws, otherwise not buy never an EV of their own volition. The reality of the facts but might be a tad different: users are proving a great curiosity with respect to the electrical means, as we have already told you are always more people that you inform about new technologies, only a small percentage but then finalize a purchase.
European users do not want to buy the EV
This is not to hostility toward the EV, expects only a greater maturity of the market, which is still plagued by very high prices, long recharging times (on average, because there are also premium means that load in less than half an hour, as the Tesla Model 3 to the supercharger from 250 kW), autonomy is not entirely satisfactory, poor infrastructure on public land.
In short, a lethal mix that longer brakes of a motorist in making the big step in this precise moment – and that in part gives reason to the words of the manager BMW. But we must be careful not to take this as an absolute axiom since many users are ready to switch are between 1-2 generations.
Taking the affirmation “European users do not want to buy the EV” in the absolute sense, either now or never, a great producer would be today the risk of stopping the development of new technologies to rest on our laurels of tradition, in practice the strategic line of Sergio Marchionne a few years ago, which is strongly penalizing FCA in the present and will continue to do so in the coming years.
Probably the best approach would be to say “European users do not want to buy the electric cars now, at this precise moment in history, waiting that the sector mature duty, that increase services, and fall costs”. This is perhaps the only possible approach, which implies marketing in parallel with the traditional car and new electric models to remain in place for several more years.
All other wars without quarter are destined to become superfluous and ridiculous, useful only to further confuse users and to lose precious time.
The true focus should obviously move to other shores, or on how to create more battery efficient (perhaps at the solid-state) and then dispose of them in a way more green possible, how to generate in a clean way new electricity and eliminate the problem of fossil fuels, translate all environmental policies designed for the cars also in other areas more pollutants – I am thinking of the cruise ships, to make a single example.
You should then apply all the above policies in a global way, in the various continents, because there is little point to make sacrifices in Europe if giants such as America and Asia avoid any rule. What is really important is to choose with a conscience the war from combat.
